Alhambra

Perched on a plateau with a commanding view of Granada, the Alhambra was constructed mainly between 1238 and 1358. Set in a locale of rare natural beauty, it overlooks the Albaicín quarter of Granada’s Moorish old city. The Darro River flows at the base of the plateau through a deep ravine to the north. The park outside the palace (Alameda de la Alhambra) was adorned by the Moors with roses, oranges, and myrtles. Its distinctive feature is the dense wood of English elms, planted in 1812 by the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsular War.

Alpujarras

The cultural interest of the region lies in its fifty-odd villages, which were the last stronghold of Granada’s late-medieval Spanish Muslims, or Moors. Soon after the Castilian took Granada in 1492, the city´s Moors were forced to convert to Christianity. Those who refused took to the hills, settling in this remote, rugged area. Spanish Christians put constant pressure on this community and ruthlessly crushed the bloody Morisco Rebellion of 1568. They executed the rebellion’s leader, Ben Humeya, in the main square of Granada. The king later issued a royal decree expelling all people of Arab descent from Granada, suspecting all Moriscos, or ‘new Christians’ of being ‘crypto Muslims’ who practised that faith in secret.

Lunch with drinks is included at a Typical Restaurant in Las Alpujarras.
