Krakow & Auschwitz

from€499
for 3 nights

This Semi Escorted tour brings you to the beautiful city of Krakow, one of the oldest cities in Poland, on a 3-night city break with a Private guided tour of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz.

Throughout the ages, Kraków has been at the forefront of Poland’s artistic and academic culture. Serving as the royal capital for five centuries, the city faced a significant shift in 1609 when it lost its status, resulting in reduced investment and slowed development. Despite appearing as a challenging period, this turn of events proved to be a blessing, preserving the city’s ancient centre and ultimately shielding it from the devastations of World War II centuries later. Presently acknowledged as the nation’s ‘second city,’ Kraków continues to shine as Poland’s crowning jewel. Numerous parks complement a plethora of historic buildings, and the basilica’s hourly trumpet call resonates in the expansive Rynek Główny square. The meticulously preserved old town, topping UNESCO’s list, stands as a lively hub with a variety of bars and eateries.

Auschwitz :

Beginning in 1940, Nazi Germany built several concentration camps and an extermination camp in the area, which at the time was under German occupation. The Auschwitz camps were a major element in the perpetration of the Holocaust; at least 1.1 million people were killed there, of whom over 90% were Jews.

The complex consisted of three main camps: Auschwitz I, the administrative centre; Auschwitz II (Birkenau), an extermination camp or Vernichtungslager; and Auschwitz III (Monowitz), a work camp.

The Polish government restored Auschwitz I and turned it into a museum honouring the victims of Nazism; Auschwitz II, where buildings were prone to decay, was preserved but not restored. Today, the Auschwitz I museum site combines elements from several periods into a single complex. For example, the gas chamber at Auschwitz I (which had been converted into an air-raid shelter for the SS) was restored. The museum contains very large numbers of men’s, women’s and children’s shoes taken from their victims; also suitcases, which the deportees were encouraged to bring with them, and many household utensils.
