Greece-The majestic monasteries of Meteora visited during our Northern Greece tour.

Join Irish holidaymakers on an informative Escorted Tour to the fascinating region of Macedonia. This seven-night holiday is based in Thessaloniki, the second-largest city in Greece. Known for its historical landmarks and vibrant waterfront, Thessaloniki offers a perfect blend of ancient heritage and modern Greek life. Throughout this Northern Greece tour, we visit sites of immense historical importance. Our expert guide will lead us through Thessaloniki’s historical centre, showcasing the White Tower, the statue of Alexander the Great, and the impressive seafront boulevard. We will see monuments spanning Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman history, including UNESCO-listed churches that tell the story of this 3,000-year-old city.

From our base in Thessaloniki, the journey continues into the heart of ancient Macedonia. We explore Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great, where remarkable 4th-century BC mosaic floors remain preserved. The archaeological site of Pella is one of the most important cultural centres in the ancient world. Here, we can appreciate the grandeur of the Agora, one of the largest public spaces ever discovered from that era. We also visit Vergina, or ancient Aigai, the site of the Tomb of Philip II. This archaeological discovery is considered one of the most significant of the 20th century. In Veroia, we visit the ‘School of Aristotle’ and the Bema of St Paul, connecting the dots between classical philosophy and early Christianity.

One of the most memorable days of this Escorted Tour is the excursion to Meteora. Known as the ‘Garden of Rocks’, this UNESCO World Heritage site features immense stone pillars topped by centuries-old monasteries. We include entrance to one of these active monasteries, allowing Irish guests to admire the intricate frescoes and panoramic views that have made this location famous worldwide. This combination of ancient archaeology and natural beauty is a true highlight of the region.

The holiday is balanced with plenty of time for leisure and personal exploration. Thessaloniki is widely regarded as the culinary capital of Greece, and we encourage Irish guests to sample local specialities like bougatsa or fresh regional produce at the Modiano and Kapani markets. Strolling along the Nea Paralia waterfront at sunset is a wonderful way to relax. With seven breakfasts and seven evening meals included, this holiday offers excellent value for those wishing to discover the cultural treasures of the north in comfort and good company.
