An Evening of Opera
In the evening, rejoin your guide for dinner in a local restaurant before attending the evening
performance of L’Elisir d’Amore at the Teatro Malibran.
The Teatro Malibran in Venice is one of the city’s most enchanting and historic opera houses,
inaugurated in 1678 on the site of Marco Polo’s former residence and originally known as the
Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo by the influential Grimani family. Quickly celebrated as the
largest, most beautiful and richly adorned theatre in Venice, it played a central role in the
development of Italian opera throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, hosting premieres and
performances by leading composers and singers of the era. In 1835 the theatre was renamed in
honour of the legendary Spanish mezzo-soprano Maria Malibran, who famously refused her fee
to help improve the venue’s condition. Carefully restored over the centuries and now seating
around 900, Teatro Malibran continues to captivate audiences with a vibrant programme of
opera, dance and music, standing as a living testament to Venice’s enduring artistic heritage
