Romania-The medieval Bran Castle in Transylvania on a sunny day during a Romania Transylvania tour.

For Irish holidaymakers looking for a destination that combines dramatic landscapes with centuries of history, this Romania Transylvania tour offers an exceptional experience. Romania is the largest of the Balkan nations and provides a unique contrast between well-preserved medieval towns and the energetic pace of its capital, Bucharest. This eight-day escorted tour is designed to showcase the two distinct sides of this fascinating country, moving from the quiet, traditional villages of Transylvania to the grand neoclassical boulevards of the city. We spend much of our time in the shadow of the spectacular Carpathian Mountains, exploring a region where history and folklore are inextricably linked.

One of the primary highlights of this trip is our four-night stay in Brasov. This mountain town is famous for its Saxon architecture, particularly its Gothic Black Church and the Baroque town square. From here, we venture out to discover the UNESCO-protected citadel of Sighisoara, a hilltop town of cobbled streets and colourful houses that was the actual birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. History enthusiasts will particularly appreciate our visits to the fortified churches of Prejmer and Harman, which were built by Saxons to defend their communities during times of war. No visit to this part of the world would be complete without seeing Bran Castle. Known globally as Dracula’s Castle, this fortress is an architectural marvel that later served as a royal residence for the Romanian monarchy.

As we transition to the capital, Bucharest, the scenery shifts to reflect the city’s nickname, ‘Little Paris.’ We spend two nights here, allowing guests to explore the Old Town, admire the 18th-century Orthodox churches, and see the scale of the Parliament House, the second-largest administrative building in the world. From the mountain air of Sinaia and the elegance of Peles Castle to the vibrant street life of Bucharest, this holiday is packed with cultural immersion. Our expert local guides are on hand to explain the complex history of the region and offer advice on where to sample traditional Romanian dishes. This is a straightforward, value-conscious holiday that ensures you see the most significant sights of Romania in comfort and safety.

Is Bran Castle actually Dracula’s Castle?

Bran Castle is the fortress widely associated with the Dracula legend due to its striking appearance and its resemblance to the description in Bram Stoker’s novel, though it was historically a Saxon fortress and later a royal residence.
