Grossglockner, Salzburg & Hohenwerfen Castle

Your journey begins with a direct flight from Dublin to Munich. On arrival, you will meet our Resort Manager and board a comfortable coach for the transfer to your hotel in Zell am See. You will stay at the Hotel Fish’Inn, which is perfectly located in the pedestrian zone. This makes it very easy to explore the nearby lake or use the CityXpress cable car. After checking in, you can enjoy the hotel’s rooftop terrace or take a quiet stroll through the local streets.

After breakfast, join your guide for a gentle walking tour of Zell am See. This is a practical way to get to know the town and its history while enjoying the fresh alpine air and views of Lake Zell. In the afternoon, you can use your Zell am See-Kaprun Summer Card to take a free cable car ride up the Schmittenhöhe. At the top, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Austrian Alps or walk some of the well-maintained mountain trails.

Today we head downstream along the Salzach River, passing through scenic regions like Pongau and Tennengau. The main highlight is the medieval Hohenwerfen Castle, which sits high above the valley. You can choose a 20-minute walk or a quick elevator ride to reach the entrance. You will have a guided tour of the fortress to learn about its long history and witness a traditional falconry display. It is a day filled with history and impressive landscape views.

Take a day to relax or explore as you please. Zell am See is very easy to navigate, with plenty of mountain huts for a quiet lunch or lakeside spots for a rest. Your summer card includes a lake cruise, which is a very pleasant way to see the town from the water. If the weather is warm, the crystal-clear water of Lake Zell is perfect for a swim, or you can simply find a local café and watch the world go by.

We set off for the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, a remarkable engineering feat that offers some of the best views in the country. This Grossglockner Salzburg tour takes you up to the Fuscher Törl and Hochtor passes, reaching heights of over 2,500 metres. You will see the Pasterze glacier and the peak of the Grossglockner itself. We also stop in the village of Heiligenblut to see its famous Gothic church before returning to the hotel.

Today we visit Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the setting for The Sound of Music. The city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is very walkable. You can spend your time exploring the Baroque architecture and narrow streets at your own speed. If you prefer a more organised approach, your guide can help you book an optional city tour with a local expert who can share more detailed stories about the city's salt-trading past.

For your final full day, you might choose to walk the 10km loop around Lake Zell, which is flat and offers lovely views. Alternatively, use your summer card for a free bus to Kaprun and take the cable car to the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. Standing at over 3,000 metres at the 'Top of Salzburg', you can experience the high-altitude scenery of the Hohe Tauern National Park before heading back for your final evening in the resort.

After a final Austrian breakfast, your coach will be ready to transfer you back to Munich airport. From there, you will board your direct flight back to Dublin, bringing home memories of the lakes, mountains, and historic castles of the Salzburg region.
