Serbia-A scenic view of the Iron Gates gorge during a Danube Balkans cruise.

Embarking on a Danube Balkans cruise is an excellent way for Irish holidaymakers to discover a part of Europe that is often overlooked but rich in history and natural beauty. Starting and ending in the vibrant city of Belgrade, this eight-day river cruise takes you through the heart of Serbia and into Romania, offering a blend of cultural exploration and spectacular scenery. For those who appreciate a well-organised holiday where everything is taken care of, this journey provides fantastic value and comfort on board the MS Vivaldi.

One of the true highlights of this itinerary is the navigation through the Iron Gates. This dramatic gorge, where the Danube narrows between steep cliffs, is widely considered one of the most impressive stretches of river in the world. As you sail, you will see historical markers like the Tabula Traiana and the massive rock-carved face of Decebalus. It is a spectacular experience that really showcases the raw power and beauty of the river. On land, the excursions are equally fascinating. You will visit Novi Sad, often called the ‘Serbian Athens’ for its beautiful Austro-Hungarian architecture and welcoming atmosphere. The trip also includes visits to spiritual sites like the Krušedol Monastery and the peaceful Saint Anne Monastery, which offers stunning views over the water.

For history enthusiasts, the Golubac Fortress is a must-see; this medieval cliffside castle looks like something straight out of a storybook. Life on board is designed to be relaxing and social. Irish guests will enjoy the all-inclusive nature of the cruise, which covers all meals and a wide selection of drinks at the bar and with meals. The food is based on refined French cuisine, but there are plenty of local touches, including a wine tasting of sweet varieties from the Sremski Karlovci region. Evenings are filled with entertainment, including a gala dinner and a lively Serbian folklore night. Throughout the journey, you will be supported by a multi-lingual host and a dedicated crew, ensuring that you can simply sit back and enjoy the view. Whether you are exploring the ‘White City’ of Belgrade or marveling at Roman ruins at the Iron Gates Museum, this cruise offers a straightforward and deeply rewarding way to see the Balkans. It is an ideal choice for travellers looking for a mix of relaxed cruising and insightful sightseeing without any hidden surprises.
