Morocco Walking Holiday

This Morocco walking holiday is a fantastic choice for those looking to swap the familiar green hills of Ireland for the rugged, sun-drenched paths of the High Atlas Mountains. On this eight-day escorted tour, you will fly from Dublin and land in the heart of North Africa, ready to explore a landscape defined by dramatic mountain passes, ancient Berber culture and vibrant medieval cities. This journey is specifically designed for those who enjoy being active and want to see the real Morocco away from the typical tourist trails.
Staying in traditional riads is a real highlight of this trip. These charming Moroccan houses are built around central courtyards and offer a peaceful, authentic atmosphere that standard hotels simply cannot match. You will spend your first night in Marrakech before heading deep into the mountains, where you will be based in the Berber village of Imlil for three nights. This area serves as the gateway to the high peaks and allows you to immerse yourself in the local way of life, seeing firsthand how the indigenous people have cultivated these steep slopes for generations.
The walking routes are classified as moderate, typically covering between 5km and 9km daily. However, travellers should be aware that hiking in Morocco occurs at a much higher altitude than most European trails, with several paths reaching over 2,000 metres. You will tackle significant ascents and descents, including the Tizi n’Addi Pass at 2,800m and the Tizi Mzik Col. The effort is well rewarded with breathtaking views across the Azzaden and Ait Mizane Valleys. Throughout these treks, you will be accompanied by expert local guides who not only know the terrain perfectly but can also share insights into the traditions and history of the mountains.
After several days of mountain exploration and fresh air in the Ouirgane Valley, the tour returns to the excitement of Marrakech. A guided walking tour will take you through the city’s labyrinthine medina. You will visit the iconic Koutoubia Mosque, the intricate Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs before finishing at the famous Jemaa El-Fna Square. Watching the square come alive in the evening with musicians, acrobats and street food stalls is an unforgettable experience. With most meals included, including dinners and packed lunches for the trails, this holiday offers excellent value for money and a perfectly organised adventure. Whether you are an experienced hiker or a regular walker with a good level of fitness, this Morocco walking holiday provides a wonderful balance of physical challenge and cultural discovery.
