Classic Japan: Land of the Rising Sun

This 12-day escorted tour is an excellent choice for value-conscious travellers who want to experience the very best of the Land of the Rising Sun. Our Japan tour package is designed to give you a deep dive into the history, architecture, and daily life of this fascinating nation, starting in the bustling neon-lit streets of Tokyo and concluding in the serene, ancient capital of Kyoto. Along the way, you will visit multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites and enjoy organised excursions that bring the local culture to life.
The journey begins in Tokyo, where you will explore some of the city’s most significant landmarks. You will visit the Meiji Shrine, walk through the tranquil Shinjuku Gyoen Garden—formerly a feudal lord’s property—and see the historic Asakusa Kannon Temple. There is also plenty of time to browse the Nakamise shopping arcade for unique souvenirs. From the capital, we move towards the iconic Mount Fuji. As the highest mountain in the country, it has been a site of worship for centuries. You will have the opportunity to take a cable-car ride (weather permitting) to enjoy breathtaking views of the majestic peak and Lake Kawaguchi.
One of the highlights of any trip to this country is experiencing the incredible efficiency of its rail network. This tour includes a ride on the world-famous ‘shinkansen’, or bullet train, as you travel towards Osaka. In Osaka, the itinerary includes a visit to the Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farmhouses and the impressive Osaka Castle. We then continue to Hiroshima, a city that offers a poignant look at modern history. You will visit the Peace Memorial Park and see the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, the only structure left standing near the epicentre of the 1945 atomic bomb blast. A boat trip to Miyajima Island allows you to see the famous ‘floating’ Torii gate of the Itsukushima Shrine.
As we head towards Kyoto, we stop at the magnificent Himeji Castle, another UNESCO site known for its brilliant white exterior. Kyoto itself is a treasure trove of culture. You will visit the Temple of the Gold Pavilion, see the thousands of red torii gates at Fushimi Inari, and walk through the historic Gion district. A particular highlight is the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, where you will learn about the intricate customs of tea preparation. You will also get a taste of authentic local life with a visit to the Nishiki Market and a lunch featuring okonomiyaki, often called ‘Japanese pizza’. This well-organised holiday combines history, scenery, and genuine cultural interaction, providing an incredible overview of Japan at a sensible price.
