Undiscovered Italy – Highlights of Puglia

Explore the sun-drenched heel of Italy on this comprehensive 7-night Escorted Tour. Puglia is a region that offers a different pace of life, where traditional culture remains at the heart of every town and village. On this trip, we will base ourselves in the ‘White City’ of Ostuni, staying at the modern 4-star Hotel Monte Sarago. This location is perfect for exploring the surrounding landscapes, from the turquoise waters of the Adriatic coast to the rolling hills dotted with ancient olive groves.
Our journey through Undiscovered Italy Puglia begins with a direct flight from Dublin to Bari. From here, we will delve into the unique architecture that makes this region so distinct. We will visit the UNESCO-protected town of Alberobello, famous for its conical ‘Trulli’ houses. These whitewashed stone dwellings are unique to this part of the world and provide a fascinating glimpse into local history. While in the area, we will also stop in Martina Franca to sample fresh local olive oils and regional wines, giving you a true taste of Puglian flavours.
A major highlight of this trip is the city of Lecce, often called the ‘Florence of the South’. Our guided walking tour will showcase the ornate baroque facades crafted from the soft local limestone, alongside the impressive remains of an ancient Roman amphitheatre. For those looking to explore even further, there is an optional full-day excursion to Matera in the neighbouring Basilicata region. Known for its ‘Sassi’ cave dwellings, Matera served as the 2019 European Capital of Culture and offers an unforgettable walking experience through its labyrinthine streets.
We also spend time on the coast, visiting the elegant seaside town of Trani with its stunning cathedral and historic castle, as well as the bustling regional capital of Bari. Throughout the week, there is ample free time built into the itinerary, allowing you to relax by the hotel’s rooftop pool, wander through Ostuni’s historic centre at your own pace, or enjoy a coffee in a sun-lit piazza. Puglia is also a paradise for food lovers, and our half-board arrangement ensures you can sample the local cuisine. You must try the famous orecchiette pasta, shaped like small ears, which is a staple of the Puglian diet. The Hotel Monte Sarago provides a comfortable base, located just a short walk from the historic centre. The rooftop bar and restaurant offer panoramic views of the city and the sea, making it the ideal spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing. This holiday is designed for travellers who appreciate a well-organised trip that balances guided excursions with personal leisure time, all while discovering the authentic charm of the Undiscovered Italy Puglia region.
