Itinerary
Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy
On arrival in Rome, you will be transferred to the port to board the fantastic cruise ship Norwegian Sky.
Livorno (Florence/Pisa), Italy
Tuscany’s third-largest city is a quintessential port town with a colourful history and cosmopolitan heritage. Declared a free port in the 17th century, Livorno (Leghorn in English) attracted traders from across the globe, who brought with them new customs and habits, exotic goods, slaves and foreign forms of worship. The result was a city famed throughout Europe for its multiculturalism. Today its seafood is the best on the Tyrrhenian coast, its shabby historic quarter threaded with Venetian-style canals is full of character, and its elegant belle époque buildings offer evocative reminders of a prosperous past. An easy train trip from Florence, Pisa and Rome, it makes an understated but undeniably worthwhile stop on any Tuscan itinerary.
Cannes, France
Glamorous Cannes sets camera flashes popping at its film festival in May when stars pose in tuxes and full-length gowns on the red carpet. But the glitz doesn’t end there. Throughout the year, as you walk among the designer bars, couture shops and palaces of La Croisette, the wealth and glamour of this city cannot fail to impress. Admiring Ferraris and Porsches and celebrity-spotting on the chic sunlounger-striped beaches and liner-sized yachts moored at the port are perennial Cannes pastimes.
Whether Cannes’ soul has managed to survive its celebrity-playground status is another question, but there’s still enough natural beauty to make a trip worthwhile: the harbour, the bay, the clutch of offshore islands and the old quarter, Le Suquet, all spring into life on a sunny day. And with the city’s famous beaches benefiting from a serious facelift in 2019, there’s suddenly lots more space to lay your towel!
Barcelona, Spain
The 1992 Summer Olympics revealed to the world what Europeans and seasoned travelers already knew – Barcelona is one of the world’s greatest treasures. Vibrant and earthy, commercial and cultural, this city of two million residents is the capital of Spain’s autonomous region of Catalonia. Stroll along the wide, tree-lined promenades of Las Ramblas and marvel at the spires of Gaudi’s Basilica La Sagrada Familia. Or visit the former Olympic Ring on the hill of Montjuic – also home to world-class parks, fountains and museums. Barcelona, which nurtured such artistic giants as Picasso, Dali, Miro and Casals, is definitely a traveler’s paradise.
Palma de Mallorca, Spain
On the one hand, this city, founded by the Romans some 2,100 years ago, is replete with (literally) wall-to-wall history and architectural splendor. You can journey back in time and wander the mazes of alleyways and cobblestone paths that surround the Gothic cathedral. On the other hand, Palma is bustling with life, showcasing the island’s best restaurants, shops, nightlife and a vibrant art scene. Explore more of Palma on a European cruise!
Alicante, Spain
Alicante, located in the Costa Blanca, is one of the most beautiful cities of the Spanish East Coast.
During your Mediterranean cruise you will discover a vibrant city connected to the sea and rich in history and architecture. From the Santa Barbara fortress, the main castle of the city, to parks and boulevards, such as the Explanada de España where you can enjoy Alicante’s breathing fresh air and relax in cozy bars and terrace cafés.
Some of the great sights to see nearby include:
• Santa Barbara Castle
• Mountain village of Guadalest
• Explanada de España
With an Excursion you will discover the Santa Barbara Castle, Alicante’s main historical sight. Sant Barbara Castle is an imposing medieval fortress located on the bare rocky hill above the town beach. From the old walls you can admire spectaculars views of the city and the whole bay.
A cruise excursion can also be an opportunity to discover the Mountain village of Guadalest, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. The sixteenth-century Moorish castle town and former Muslim settlement is built high up in the surrounding rock, and you enter through a gateway tunnelled into the mountain.
With one of our excursions you can also discover the Explanada de España, Alicante’s famous maritime promenade. It runs parallel to the port, from Plaza Puerta del Mar to Parque de Canalejas and has a mosaic pavement that mimics the waves of the sea. This boulevard is full of cafés and terraces where you can try some typical food or just relax while enjoying the Mediterranean views.
Motril, Spain
Motril is a magnificent Spanish gem on the Mediterranean coast. The relaxing sands of Playa de Torrenueva are a great place to spend a sunny day. For some inland exploring, head to the Cueva Del Capitan for a fantastic nature hike. There’s also plenty of history waiting to be experienced in the city. Stop by the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza to see a 17th-century church surrounded by incredible panoramic views. Then head to the Pre-industrial Sugar Cane Museum to learn all about the region’s staple crop.
Cádiz, Spain (for Seville)
The oldest continuously populated city in Spain, Cadiz is a unique ocean port in south west Spain that has been inhabited for the last 3000 years. Located on a peninsula jutting into the Gulf of Cadiz, the city is surrounded almost entirely by water and thanks to its historical trade links, it has many foreign influences that are still visible today. Narrow cobbled streets, small squares and weather-beaten buildings dating back to the Moors make the old city a charming place to explore with look-out towers used by merchants to spot returning trade ships scattered along the skyline. Cadiz also has a fine collection of ancient and contemporary art in its many museums and galleries.
Lisbon, Portugal
Following breakfast onboard, you will be invited to disembark the Norwegian Sky and you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Dublin.
