Düsseldorf, Germany

Koblenz, Germany
Situated at the famous ‘Deutsches Eck’ where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet and the magnificent Hunsrück, Eifel and Westerwald mountain ranges converge, it’s no wonder Koblenz is considered one of the most picturesque cities in Germany. The appeal of Koblenz isn’t just skin-deep however; over 2,000 years of history and an abundance of cultural and historical monuments ensure this ancient city is always a memorable and rewarding stop on a German river cruise.
Traben-Trarbach, Germany
Affectionately known as the ‘Jewel of the Central Moselle’, Traben-Trarbach was once a busy wine trading port, a town of great wealth at the turn of the last century. Today visitors can still uncover the large underground wine cellars and outstanding art nouveau villas on guided tours, sample the local wine or stay in one of the magnificent houses.
Take time to explore the vine-bordered amphitheatre, woods and vineyards of this picturesque town nestled on the Moselle, before discovering a wealth of attractive buildings and architectural treasures.
Discover the ruins of Grevenburg Castle, which house a cosy tavern and castle garden, and offers stunning views of the Moselle River; or explore the Mont Royal Fortress Ruins, where a few remnants of the cellar vaults and casemates are still preserved. The plans of the fortress and archaeological findings are on display in the Middle Moselle Museum, along with examples of the history of Traben-Trarbach and a unique collection of furnishings from a house belonging to wealthy families in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Elsewhere in the city, there are many fine examples of ‘Belle Époque’ architecture, such as the City House and the Old Train Station. Don’t miss the Villa Huesgen, located on the Traven Mosel shore, or the Bridge Gate on the Mosel bridge in Trarbach. The mix of Art Deco, baroque, neo-classical and Moselle typical buildings sit comfortably with each other, making for a not-to-be-missed stop on your Brabant river cruise.
Trier, Germany
The oldest city in Germany, and located on the Moselle River, Trier is the birthplace of Karl Marx. Known as the ‘Rome of the North’, it was the key city of the Roman northern territories. Try to visit as many of the nine UNESCO World Heritage sites you can during your visit; among them are superb examples of Roman monuments, including an amphitheatre, thermal baths, and imperial throne room. More modern treasures include Germany’s oldest Gothic church and the baroque building where Karl Marx was born.
Trier is easily explored on foot, as many of these key sights are within walking distance of the old city, but do experience the tourist mini-train (Römer Express) on its tour of the Altstadt (Old Town). Take in the sights and sounds of the Hauptmarkt, the colourful and lively market square in the centre of the city, leading to many pedestrianised streets with more fascinating areas to explore, one of which leads to Karl-Marx-Haus, which is now a museum.
As Brabant meanders along the Moselle River, vineyards can be seen rising up the steep slopes, leading to world famous wineries in the heart of this superb wine region, where you may be tempted to try a glass of the renowned Vin de Moselle, synonymous with Riesling.
Cochem, Germany
Although small, the fairytale-esque German town of Cochem is sure to make a big impression. Situated within the breathtaking Moselle Valley on one of the winding Moselle River’s seemingly endless hairpin bends, Cochem is one of Europe’s most charming and picturesque locations. Sailing here is always simply unforgettable, with views of the unspoilt lush green countryside to enjoy from your river boat; while in the town itself, there are plenty of eye-catching sights to discover too.
Rüdesheim am Rhein, Germany
Rüdesheim am Rhein is a town in the Rhine Valley, Germany. It’s known for winemaking, especially of Riesling wines. In the center, Drosselgasse is a lane lined with shops, taverns and restaurants. Nearby, Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet is a museum of automated musical instruments. Medieval Brömserburg Castle is home to the Rheingau Wine Museum, exhibiting wine paraphernalia from ancient times to the present.
Düsseldorf, Germany
Dazzling Düsseldorf – the capital of the North Rhine-Westphalia state – is a vibrant modern metropolis situated on the banks of the beautiful Rhine River. A thriving economic centre, this stylish city is one of Germany’s largest, wealthiest and most populated; and renowned for its international media, creative and financial industries, cosmopolitan culture, buzzing nightlife and striking architecture.
