Fred. Olsen Borealis
Bearing a name that previously bestowed an Olsen-owned vessel in the 1940s, and inspires thoughts of the Aurora Borealis, elegant Borealis proudly connects with, and represents, our founding family’s history and Norwegian heritage. Stylish, spacious and comfortable, with capacity for fewer than 1,400 guests, she’s in keeping with our commitment to offering a more traditional style of cruising.
But while Borealis’ capacity is smaller than many cruise vessels, she’s still one of the largest ships, Show lessby size, in our fleet. On board Borealis you’ll find you’re never overcrowded. There is always ample room in which to indulge yourself in the stylish dining venues, enjoy a glass of your favourite tipple and fantastic entertainment at the bars, lounges and theatres, and while away the hours by the all-season pool. And of course, with our friendly staff providing our typical level of personal, attentive service, there’s an intimate feel to the on board experience too.

Bars & Lounges:
Borealis features eleven stylish, spacious and comfortable bars and lounges, providing plenty of choice and variety.
While each Fred. Olsen ship has its own distinctive personality, across the fleet you’ll find a consistent approach to bar and lounge themes which help to create the familiar, home-from-home feel that our guests know and love to enjoy time and time again. Every public area has plenty of space in which to relax and make the most of your time on board – this is the case for both Borealis and her sister ship, Bolette.
Shown here is the ship’s main evening show lounge, an impressive two-tiered venue designed to provide each guest the utmost comfort and unspoilt views of the stage during the live after-dinner shows each evening.
Dining:
The fine dining experience enjoyed in in the elegant restaurants and dining venues on board our ships is a high point of every Fred. Olsen cruise. There are deliciously-tempting, expertly prepared dishes, from perfectly cooked breakfasts to sumptuous five course á la carte dinners, on offer throughout the day, presented with the personal touch of Fred. Olsen’s famously attentive service.
There’s an undoubted sense of occasion to dining in Borealis’ main restaurant, a grand two-tiered venue featuring classical, elegant décor and a variety of seating options and table sizes, perfect for both intimate and large group dining. Guests can choose to dine in one of the smaller supplementary dining venues too, or perhaps at the more relaxed buffet restaurant.
The dress code in all restaurants is casual during the day, while the evenings are usually smart-casual, apart from on our fantastic Formal Nights.
Entertainment:
On a cruise holiday, we know that your on board experience is just as important to you as the time you spend ashore. That’s why we are dedicated to ensuring our entertainment programme is packed with activities and memorable performances that help to create inspirational days and unforgettable nights.
You’ll find that there’s plenty to keep you entertained during the day on board Borealis, whether you prefer to while away the hours relaxing or engaging your body and mind. The ship’s facilities include two swimming pools, two jacuzzis and an impressive spa with a Thermal Spa, Aroma Room, Hydro Pool, two saunas and nine treatment rooms, while there are tennis and basketball courts and a Demonstration Theatre – which hosts fantastic cookery classes and demonstrations – too.
When the lights go down and you settle into your evening, we’ll treat you to a selection of live shows ranging from music and cabaret to quick-fire stand-up comedy, all enjoyed in the space and comfort of our stylish lounges and theatres. And, of course, throughout the ship you can sit, relax and enjoy a glass of your favourite tipple accompanied by the gentle sounds of live acoustic music.
You can find more info about the Borealis, including Deck Plans, on our Ship Information page.

Bergen, Norway
Bergen
From its picturesque location, nestled amidst fjords and mountains, to the iconic Bryggen Wharf, featuring colourful timbered houses and cobbled streets, Bergen offers a captivating blend of culture and nature. Views of the city and its surroundings can be seen from atop Mount Fløyen and Mount Ulriken, reached via funicular railway and cable car, respectively, while the vibrant fish market is ideal for sampling fresh seafood and Bergen staples such as fish soup. During summer, you will have opportunities to explore the city’s hiking trails for remarkable views of the surrounding fjords
Eidfjord, Norway
Maurangerfjord, Norway
Furebergfoss Waterfall, Norway
Eidfjord
Picturesque Eidfjord is your gateway to some of Norway’s most spectacular natural features, like the awe-inspiring Vøringfoss Waterfall, tumbling down steep cliffs deep within the Måbødalen Valley. You will have opportunities to witness the waterfall and outstanding vistas of the surrounding fjord landscapes from a specially created observation platform, while the interactive Hardangervidda Nature Centre focuses on the region’s nature, climate, and wildlife. During your visit to Eidfjord, you can participate in activities such as hiking around the numerous trails available or enjoying a guided kayak tour along the tranquil waters of the fjord.
Cruising Maurangerfjord & Furebergsfossen
As you sail along the serene waters of the lesser-known arm of Hardangerfjord, Maurangerfjord is a beautiful narrow channel flanked by ruggedly steep cliffs, leading to Furebergfossen, a waterfall that flows directly into the fjord. During summer, you will be able to witness its sheer power as it cascades majestically down the craggy rock face and feel the spray on your face as your Captain manoeuvres your ship for the best possible views. Surrounded by dense forests, this peaceful fjord offers tranquillity and natural beauty
Lustrafjord, Norway
Skjolden/Sognefjord, Norway
Cruising Lustrafjord
Gently sloping green hills, steep mountains, and charming villages surround the jewel-like waters of Lustrafjord, offering miles of incredible natural beauty. As you sail along the fjord, you’ll witness the majestic Feigefossen, one of Norway’s highest waterfalls, at its most powerful in the summer months, and the country’s oldest remaining Stave church, built in the 12th century. From your ship’s decks, you may have the opportunity to spot marine life such as seals, otters, and dolphins, along with magnificent birdlife flying overhead.
Pass Urnes Stave Church
Located on the picturesque Sognefjord in Norway, Urnes Stave Church is a striking medieval wooden structure and is one of the oldest stave churches in the country. It’s included on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its historical importance and well-preserved architecture. As your cruise ship glides past, you’ll be able to see the distinctive designs of intricately carved wooden portals, blending Viking and Christian artistry, which reflects a unique combination of cultural influences.
Skjolden
The idyllic village of Skjolden is located at the end of Norway’s longest fjord, the Sognefjorden, where the deep blue waters contrast against the green landscape and red-roofed houses, creating a summer kaleidoscope of colour. Spectacular waterfalls tumble down steep cliffsides into the fjord below, and close by are the magnificent Jotunheimen Mountains and Jostedalsbreen Glacier, which you will have opportunities to explore on a tour from your ship. You’ll also be ideally placed to enjoy a hike to the tiny hut where world-famous Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein exiled himself to write some of his most important works.
Vikøyri, Norway
Vikøyri
Located along the south bank of Sognefjord – the largest fjord in Norway and surrounded by amazing scenery, Vikøyri is a small, picturesque town with plenty of attractions to discover and enjoy. Vikøyri is the main settlement and central hub of Vik, where you will find two medieval churches with vast histories – the must-visit Hove Church, originally built in 1170, and Hopperstad Stave Church – built in 1130, both restored in the 1880’s by famous architect Peter Andreas Blix and featuring elaborate architectural designs with incredible attention to detail. The town is also home to the only factory in the world that creates gammelost, a unique type of Norwegian cheese and is the location of the only prison in Sogn og Fjordane
