Itinerary
Belfast, Northern Ireland
You board the Ambassador Ambition in Belfast Harbour. She sets off on your holiday in the afternoon.
At Sea
Honfleur, France
Over the years many renowned painters and writers have been attracted to pretty Honfleur, which with its narrow, half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets and charming old harbour set in a sheltered cove off the Seine’s tidal estuary, is simply enchanting. Unlike many of its Normandy neighbours, Honfleur was spared during the bombing of World War Two and nestled in its tidy, picturesque streets historic buildings house art galleries, artists’ studios, boutiques, restaurants, cafes and fine souvenir shops.
Bruges (Zeebrugge), Belgium
Often called the ‘Venice of the North’, Bruges is famous for its beautiful canals and historic buildings. The charming city centre is an UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its cultural, architectural and historical importance. A combination of original gothic structures and modern, intelligent designs give Bruges a completely unique appearance and feel.
With most of the city’s medieval architecture still intact, Bruges is a delight to explore. Home to one of the world’s highest brick buildings, the Church of our Lady and the Madonna and Child sculpture, no wonder Bruges is so highly regarded. A visit to the city’s 13th century Belfry is an absolute must. The most famous landmark in the city, the Belfry houses a 48 bell municipal carillon and a full-time carillonneur that plays free traditional concerts for all to enjoy.
Ijmuiden, Netherlands
Located amidst the woods and the uncontaminated lagoons of the Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland, you can admire the town of IJmuiden, on the Nordzeekanaal during your cruise of Northern Europe.
In IJmuiden your cruise ship will lay anchor in the waters of the North Sea Canal (Nordzeekanaal) one of the most gigantic, hydraulic engineering works in the world. It is this 24km long canal that enables big ships to reach Amsterdam. IJmuiden is a quiet town with small, red brick houses, each with its own little front garden.
This is a seaside resort for the Dutch but, above all, an important fishing centre; its fish market is the second largest in the country and its port is amongst the first ten largest ports in Western Europe. IJmuiden is less than 150 years old and originally it was just the place where the labourers working on the Nordzeekanaal lived.
Later, in the course of the second world war, it was requisitioned by the Germans who turned it into a sort of fortress, as you can see when you visit the Ijmuiden Bunker Museum. While on your MSC cruise of Northern Europe, and particularly when in the Netherlands, the greatest attraction are the canals. Less than 15km from IJmuiden, an excursion to Haarlem will take you to a place where you can enjoy a rhythm and an atmosphere which are very different to those of the port where you landed.
A former centre for the production of textiles, it is a medium size town with an attractive centre definitely worth visiting. On the banks of the Spaarne river you will find the characteristic de Adriaan, a hexagonal mill built in 1778 but rebuilt after a fire destroyed it in1932.
At Sea
St. Mary’s, Isles of Scilly, England
Britain’s only island archipelago, the magical Isles of Scilly lie just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall. St Mary’s, the largest of the five inhabited islands, is a delight with white sand beaches, tranquil waters and stunning seascapes. The attractive village of Hugh Town, considered the ‘capital’, is the hub of the islands’ activity. The second largest and the only privately-owned island is Tresco, where, in the glorious Abbey Gardens, some 20,000 exotic species thrive in the sub-tropical climate. Optional excursions explore both St. Mary’s and Tresco, two of the beautiful cluster of islands that are worlds apart from everyday life.
