“Match me such a marvel, save in Eastern clime; a rose-red city, half as old as Time.” John William Burgon famously described Petra, founded 2,000 years ago by the Nabataeans and re-discovered by Burckhardt over 200 years ago. Our ‘Perspectives of Petra’ maximises your enjoyment of this astonishing site.
Jordan is a journey through religious and ancient history: from Mount Nebo, burial site of Moses, from where he viewed the ‘Promised Land’ to Bethany, baptism site of Jesus on the river Jordan; from Madaba’s mosaic map of ancient Palestine to Jerash, best preserved Roman city of the Decapolis and known as ‘Pompeii of the East’; from the evocative Desert Castles of the Umayyad caliphs, used as a refuge by T.E. Lawrence to the Crusader castle of Kerak on the King’s Highway. Jordan’s natural beauty is all around, best displayed in dramatic Wadi Rum, used for the filming of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’.
The highlight of any visit to Jordan is Petra. Its rich historical past, ruined Roman cities and desert citadels are Jordan’s most valuable treasures. Points of interest are bountiful and include the Street of Façades, the Royal Tombs, a Byzantine church and the incredible, ancient Qasr el-Bint Faroun.
If you’re interested in exploring the biblical themes of Jordan, you could visit Umm Qais was Gadara, where Jesus gave permission to the evil spirits to enter a herd of pigs, or view the baptism site of Jesus at Bethany, the mosaic of ancient Palestine at Madaba and Mount Nebo. Whatever your faith, the prosperous biblical sites of this country can have a profound impact.
Red, dusty scenes and arid deserts: this is a common perception of Jordan’s landscape. See it for yourself and you’ll discover majestic peaks, vast valleys and the unique Dead Sea – the lowest point on the earth’s surface surrounded by a protective, rugged, mountainous terrain where you can bathe in the highly saline waters infused with minerals and health enhancing mud.
